FOOTLITE MUSICALS

Footlite Musicals, an all-volunteer theater in Indianapolis, IN, wanted to develop a unified vision for their marketing.

Looking to emphasize their mission of being a space to make community theater accessible, the objective was to design and implement a guide for creating professional-level social media content that was both eye-catching and inviting to a broad audience.

My ongoing work with Footlite involves acting not only on stage, but also as a visual media manager for their marketing team. I am responsible for developing the graphics and visual style for each show, as well as creating graphics for Footlite events and partnerships, and being a show photographer. I also design the handouts and posters for each show, which are distributed by grassroots methods by casts and crews. Finally, I am responsible for redesigning the cover of each program booklet to display Footlite's past performances while indicating the current show.

PIPPIN

Show Graphics & Photos

Creating the graphics for PIPPIN, I opted to make designs emphasizing that the show is a play within a play. The central white piece on the social media banner replicates the opening of a grand curtain, while the diamond pattern is indicative of the show being a carnival act that gets darker as you look further away from the center of the design.

For the modifications to Footlite's logo, I picked colors directly from PIPPIN's logo, settling on using the brighter tones to contrast the darker background they stand against.

FOOTLOOSE

Show Graphics & Photos

Taking inspiration from some of the more modern FOOTLOOSE marketing materials, I designed this series using more saturation to match the bright and cheerful colors of the provided logo. The purple and black gradient background is a play on the idea of "Footloose at Footlite," which was used more than once in the show's marketing.

For the Footlite logo design, I went with yellows that were close to the original provided while replicating the strong pink highlight behind it. I ended up using this pink drop shadow for all text since it made the plain white font stand out better.

Finally, in place of some of the established font for the headers, I used Redondo Ave in some cases, as it matched the logo and added strong accent for a call to action.

HEATHERS

Show Graphics & Photos

HEATHERS was a very interesting experience in which I pulled triple duty in creating the graphics, doing show photography, and being on backstage crew.

Design-wise, instead of using the iconic imagery of the three Heathers in the marketing, the producer requested iconography that was more inclusive to give the message that they were casting for talent more than appearance. As a result, I ended up keeping with the theme of plaid while bringing in the Heathers' polo sticks in their place.

Overall, the designs all centered around the use of red, green, and yellow with the textured overlay, Footlite's logo redesign included.

NEWSIES

Show Graphics & Photos

My involvement with NEWSIES was much more intimate, as I was also on the show's cast. Being closer to the process helped me get inspiration for graphics and allowed me to notice smaller moments to capture in show photography.

Backgrounds mainly maintained a dark blue brick texture like in the original media, but wherever possible, I displayed important information as a newspaper headline. This required research on turn-of-the-century paper printing and typography to feel like each graphic was handed straight to the audience by the Newsies themselves.
